Greetings

You have successfully navigated yourself to the homepage of the upcoming youth festival (Jugendfestival, JF) – welcome!

Guess how many Jugendfestivals have already taken place?! Four! It all started back in 2007 in Frankfurt, the second JF happened in Berlin in 2011, after that we came together in Stuttgart in 2016 and the last JF was in Munich in 2019.

We are finally going to have the next and fifth JF on the 1st and 2nd of October 2022, in the beautiful city of Hamburg! This time our motto is “FULL SPEED AHEAD!”, symbolising the fun that everyone is going to have. But more importantly, it stands for all the knowledge, self-confidence and empowerment that our visitors are going to take home with them and that is going to help them evolve with full speed ahead.

The event is organised by four captains and 18 sailors that have been working together continuously since end of 2019 to make it happen.

There are going to be two days full of interesting workshops and talks divided into two sections – one for children and one for young people, starting with an amazing opening ceremony and ending the two days with a magical closing ceremony and lots of fun in between!

Event

The 5th Jugendfestival is an educational and cultural event in Germany for children and adolescents who use sign language, taking place on 1st and 2nd October 2022 at the Congress Center Hamburg (CHH). Don’t know how to get to the festival? Then check it out here.

The event offers a sign language platform for deaf people and other sign language-oriented people. Many programmes are additionally translated in spoken German and in International Sign. The event is also accessible for wheelchair users and deafblind people. Children and young people as well as interested adults are welcome and will contribute to make the festival an unforgettable experience.

The festival will have workshops, lectures, information booths and experiences around the culture and education of deaf people. All visitors will also be able to exchange ideas and broaden their skills. Knowledge will be imparted; experiences will be passed on and good entertainment will ensure that fun is not neglected.

Organisation

The Jugendfestival is being organised by the German Deaf Association (Deutsche Gehörlosen-Jugend e.V., DGJ). The association supports deaf children and young people and advocates for members of a linguistic and cultural minority. Four dedicated captains (leaders) and 18 motivated sailors (main team) want to give you an event that you will remember forever. Take a look here to get to know our team.

Our five principles

Following the motto “FULL SPEED AHEAD!” we want to support the young sign language community in its development. These five principles are the foundation of the concept of the 5th Jugendfestival.

1. Imparting knowledge in German Sign Language (DGS)

Signing lecturers will hold interesting lectures and workshops on various topics over two days. You can quench your thirst for knowledge in the children and youth programme.

2. Different aspects of the deaf culture

At both the opening and closing ceremony of the festival, deaf artists will perform and quicken your heartbeat! You can expect poetry slams, dance performances, plays and much more.

3. Finding your identity

Not being able to hear doesn’t have to be a deficit. On the contrary, our lecturers and artists are proud to be deaf and will show you that being deaf can be part of an identity that is destined for great things.

4. Adiverse society

What do the #metoo, Black Lives Matter, and LGBTQ+ movements have in common? They advocate for equal participation in society. Learn more about their demands in our talks and workshops.

5. Empowerment

You don’t know your interests and strengths yet? Not only will our lectures and workshops offer you the chance to build these, but also the exchange of opinions and experiences with like-minded people can help you to discover them.

We say thank you!

The 5th Youth Festival is a social project promoted by Aktion Mensch. We would like to thank you for the trust you have placed in us.

A big thank you also goes to our sponsors. Thank you for supporting our goals and making an unforgettable event possible for the adolescents.

To date, we have also received many private donations for which we would like to express our sincere thanks.  We would like to share the following words from an anonymous donor with you:

“The Corona pandemic, which has already lasted for two years, has left children& young people very limited in what they can do. School could not be attended, friends and family could not be seen and playgrounds were closed. This was a great loss for the development of the children & youth. Therefore, I believe that we need to encourage them and give them the opportunity to compensate somewhat for the loss. The 5th Jugendfestival is a great opportunity for this! I am happy when children & youth can be present at the event and go home satisfied with a full load of coming together and empowerment. We should definitely support the children & young people in this difficult time. Of course, not only donations for the 5th Jugendfestival are a good way to do this, but also donations in other relevant areas that also promote sign language and education about the deaf community. This could be, for example, a sports club or a political engagement. I think it is very important to increase people’s willingness to donate and I am happy when we can make a difference together!”

Responsible for the design of our website are our designers Deborah Skorupka (@debosko_illustration), Melina Wischlitzki (@buntesonne_com) and Peggy Steinbach. Thank you so much for your social engagement!
